Balenciaga and His Legacy open at the Meadows Museum in Dallas
The
premise of this exhibition is to compare and contrast the distinctive
work of Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895 – 1972) with the designers
that he mentored: Hubert de Givenchy, Oscar de la Renta, Emanuel Ungaro,
and André Courrèges. Just as the art world was never the
same after the contributions of Picasso, fashion design was forever changed
by Balenciaga’s tenure in Paris. Balenciaga, whose mastery of tailoring,
fabric, and line awed his clientele, also kept peers enthralled with his
talent. The late Richard Martin wrote: “In fact, Balenciaga was
so very like a 20th century artist because in temperament, vocabulary,
and attainment, he was one.”
