Frequently Asked Questions for the T F C

Donations and Gifts

1. What if I want to donate something to the TFC?
If possible, please make a photograph and send it along with any pertinent information to the attention of curator Myra Walker. Information may include history of the garment, who wore it, the label or designer information and why it will make a good addition to the TFC. The address is listed under contact.

2. What if I have too many items to photograph?
You may request an personal appointment with the curator to view the items to be considered. Time and date is subject to scheduling, so please plan ahead by at least three weeks.

3. Will a decision be made immediately?
No. The curator may take the items on temporary loan back to the TFC for evaluation. This does not mean they are accepted automatically. Please understand that there are space limitations for storage. While the TFC will not be able to take on the responsibility of everything that is offered, alternatives are available.

4. How soon will the paperwork be processed?
This will vary due to the size and complexity of the donation. The process is not complete until the donor has signed a Receipt of Gift form and returned it to the TFC. This becomes the deed of gift and a contract between the TFC and the donor who agrees to transfer ownership of the listed objects. Since the TFC operates solely with student assistants, this process can take time.

5. Will I get a tax deduction for my donation to the TFC?
This is a topic that often creates confusion. Curators are not appraisers nor can we assign values to any objects offered for consideration as it would be a conflict of interest. Unless, what is being offered totals to more than $5,000, it will not be enough to file for a tax deduction. That said, if you want to seek the advice of an appraiser, they usually charge around $75 per hour to make a formal assessment of the value. They prefer to view the actual objects, which may include travel expenses. An appraiser will research each item and describe it as well as determine the market value of the object. Their time can add up, so be prepared. For more information on appraisals see: resource link

6. Does the Texas Fashion Collection purchase clothing offered by individuals?

At this time, the TFC has limited accession funds available. If a purchase if made by the curator, it is often at a vintage clothing show where the item can be inspected on site. The NAMSB Foundation makes a generous annual donation of $1,000 specifically toward the purchase of menswear for the TFC. This has increased the range of the menswear collection during the past few years. A purchase has to be something specific that is lacking in the TFC to be considered.

Tours & Programs

1. Does the TFC have a permanent fashion exhibition?
Yes. Fashion on Main opened in September 2006. The gallery is located on the first floor of the UCD building at 1901 Main St. in Dallas. Plans are being made for the expansion of the gallery and the eventual relocation of the collection to 1901 Main St.

2. What if I want to see the collection in storage?
Please call or make an appointment at least one month in advance. It takes about one hour to show around a small group of 4-6 people. Parking is available at the NT visitor garage and the UNT Union is next door if you want to have lunch on campus.

3. What about bringing a group to see the TFC in storage?
We often host student groups, but request that this appointment to be set up two months in advance. Times have to work with scheduled classes in the resource room. The capacity is 40 and the tour will be split into two groups. It takes 1/2 to 2 hours to host a large group. There is no charge for
student groups.

For a basic tour of a non-student group, a $5 per person charge is requested. This fee is a donation to a fund that supports the conservation and storage of the TFC. Other groups, such as the Embroiderers Guild of America, often request tours based on special interests. Groups can request a half day ($250) or all day ($500) workshop with the TFC curator. Checks should be made to the Texas Fashion Collection. UNT is a non-profit institution.

4. Can groups or individuals take photographs in the TFC?
Photography is permitted as long it is for personal use and not to be published in any format. See copyright.

5. What about lectures and programs off campus?
Curator and Director Myra Walker is available for lectures about various fashion related topics in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The honorarium fee is $500. For lectures that include travel, all expenses related to travel will be in addition to the lecture fee. Workshops on selected topics are available for a half day ($350) and whole day ($700) plus any travel expenses.

6. Can I make an individual research appointment?
Yes, you should e-mail or call for an appointment at least one month in advance. (See contact) . It is suggested that you do preliminary research at TFC Online to make sure that the TFC has examples available in your subject area. Please limit your request to 5 pieces to be viewed per appointment.
